BRILEY - GREEN

JONES    PHILBECK/FELBACH   POOL/PETTYPOOL, HOFFMAN   RAGSDALE

MARTHA "MATTIE" LOUELLA BRILEY was my great grandmother.  She was born 1878 in BonneTerre, St. Francois County, Missouri.  She was the daughter of Mary Jane Green and James Briley.  In 1897 Mattie married James Washington Monroe Henderson.  They became the parents of ten children including a set of twins (one of whom died in infancy).   Mattie died in 1974 in Desloge, St. Francois County, Missouri at the age of 95.   She is buried in Big River Cemetery, Washington County, Missouri.  For picture of Mattie & more information about her click on the Henderson link above.

JAMES  TALBOT (sometimes spelled TALBERT) BRILEY was born in 1853 in either Kentucky or Missouri.  He was the son of Benjamin Briley.  Believe that James' middle name "Talbot" may be the maiden name of one of his female ancestors. James died in 1915& is buried in Germania Cemetery in St. Francois County, Missouri.

On Christmas day 1873 James married Mary Jane GREEN at the residence of Benjamin Briley in St. Francois County, Missouri.   They became the parents of ten children, seven of whom survived:

Caroline Liza - born 1 April 1875 Bonne Terre, St. Francois Co., Mo.  Died: 1 July 1962 Desloge, St. Francois Co., Mo.

Child - died in infancy - buried Germania Cemetery

BENJAMIN BRILEY
b: 1825 - 1830 Ohio
m: 1) ???   2) 9 July 1865 Elizabeth Armon, Perry T., St.FranCoMo
d: after 1880

Children by wife #1:

James T. - b: 1854 Ky.

John F. - b: 1856 Mo.

?Catherine Briley? - b: 1856 Mo.

Children by wife #2 Elizabeth Armon:

Laura B. Briley - b: 1868 Mo. - m: 30 Apr. 1885 Emmett Forshee

Julia Ann - b: 1870 Mo. - m: #1) 10 Feb 1884 Thomas Wright, Bonne Terre, St.FranCoMo. #2) 30 Jan 1887 Thomas Van Parks - d:  May 1939

1850 census:
There was a B. Briley living in St. Louis, Missouri.  His age was 32 (birthdate would be 1818) & his occupation was laborer.  Wife Catherine age 32, two daughters:

Mary - age 3 (born 1847)

Josephine - age 1(born 1849)

Although the census gave the birthplaces for the adults as Baden & Hanover there is the possibility that that is incorrect.  I wonder if  this may be my Benjamin with birthdate & places incorrectly given.

1860 Census:
There was a Benjamin Briley living in Bowles Township in Franklin County, Missouri in what appears to be a boarding house.  It gives his age as 30 (birthdate would be 1830), birthplace as Ohio.  He had two small sons with him:

James T. - age six, (born 1854) birthplace Kentucky

John F. - age four, (born 1856) birthplace Missouri.

1870 Census:
Benjamin & Eliza are residing in Perry Township.  It gives Benjamin's age as 40 (birthdate would be 1830), occupation farmer, value of real estate 175, personal property 155, birthplace Ohio.  His wife, Eliza, is age 39, birthplace Tennessee.  There are two Briley children in the household:

Catherine Briley - age 14, (born 1856) born Missouri

Laura B. Briley - age 2, (born 1868) birthplace Missouri

My great great grandfather, James T. & his brother John are not in the household & could not find them anywhere in St. Francois County in the 1870 census.

1880 Census:
for St. Francois County the Benjamin Briley family is still residing in Perry Township.  His age is given as 55 (birthdate would be 1825), occupation farmer, birthplace Ohio, birthplace of father & mother Ohio. Two children in household:

Laura - age 12, born Missouri

Julia Ann - age 10, born Missouri.

For 30 years (1860 - 1880 censuses) the birth place of Ohio for Benjamin Briley seems to be consistent even if his birthdate isn't.

Some of the research on the Benjamin Briley family was done by Barbara Klinlesmith-Geisert. Also Ancestry.com.
