*GEORGE DOGGETT (my 5th great grandfather) came from Tennessee to Missouri.  George is believed to be the son of Miller Doggett the Revoltionary War soldier.  George & several of his siblings - Isaac, Jacob & Susannah were early settlers in Missouri Territory.  They settled in the area that was first Ste. Genevieve County, then Washington County & finally St. Francois County. George is mentioned in the records as early as 1800.   In March of 1814 in Big River Township, Washington County George took up a stray black horse aged about 5 years old &  appraised at $20.
George was definately an heir of Miller Doggett.  I have a copy of a deed  recorded in Washington County, Missouri & dated 6 July 1818 it lists George & five others as selling their three combined shares of Miller Doggett's 200 acres of land in Jefferson County, Tennessee which Miller acquired in 1789.
George Doggett died intestate in St.Louis, Missouri & was recorded 04/12/1822. John & Asa Doggett were the executors of his estate.  His six children are named in the probate records in the following order: sons first - Asa, Isaac, John Doggett's widow Nancy [Massey];  then the daughters: Rachel, wife of George McGahan, Mary wife of [George] Williams &  Rhodey wife of William Jackson.  Each child inherited $15.34.

*RHODA DOGGETT was my 4th great grandmother.   She was born in Tennessee in 1797 and was the daughter of George Doggett.  She was first married  to her cousin Jesse Doggett.   They had one son George M.G.Doggett.  He was born in 1817 in Tennessee.  Rhoda & Jesse returned to Missouri in 1818.  After Isaac Dogget's death in that year in what would later become St. Francois County they were the sellers of his property.

In January of 1823 Jesse was the appraiser of a stray taken up by Martin Witerwitch.  Also in August of the same year he appraised a stray taken up by Patrick Malone.  The receipt was signed with an "x".

Jesse Doggett died intestate in St. Louis, Missouri in 1824.   John D. Doggett was the administrater of his estate.  Jesse's probate papers name Rhoda as his wife & George M.G. Doggett as his son.

Rhoda had remarried by 1833 & I am descended from Rhoda and her second husband WILLIAM JACKSON who was from either Tennessee or Kentucky.  They were the parents of five children: Mary, Elizabeth, Martha, Frances (Fanny), and Asa.  William died sometime between 1840 and 1850.  In 1850 Rhoda & her children Eliza, Martha, Frances & Asa were residing with her son George M.G. Doggett in St. Francois County.  Rhoda was not in the 1860 St. Francois County census so may have died between 1850 and 1860.

GEORGE M. G. DOGGETT - Was the son of Rhoda Doggett & Jesse Doggett.  George M.G. was born in Tennessee in 1817 & came to Missouri with his parents in 1818.   Later he owned property on Big River in Perry township T37N R4E SEC34 & T37N R4E SEC27.   He never married and died in 1895 in St. Francois County, Missouri.  He is buried in the Merrill Cemetery along Big River between Leadwood Access & Bone Hole Access.  In a deed recorded in St. Francois County it names his half-sisters & brother as his heirs.

Probate filed 2 August 1909 - J.R. Stretesky, Admin. - real estate - 58 feet off of the west end of lot 2 in block 7 in town of Settleton, in St. Francois County, Missouri.  Personal property - none.  Published in Bonne Terre Star 6 Dec. 1907 & again  Dec. 17, 24, 31, 1909,

RACHEL DOGGETT
was born in Tennessee in 1799.  She was sister to Rhoda.  Rachel was married in Missouri in 1818 to George McGahan.  George, originally from Pennsylvania & Virginia, was also an important early settler in St. Francois County, Missouri.  He was instrumental in getting the first paved roads in the area, as well as being a judge.  Rachel died June 8th, 1846 at the age of 46 years, & 6 months & is buried on what was once the McGahan farm in the vicinity northeast of BonneTerre.   There is a cemetery transcription by Hazel Murphy Willa that states that this cemetery no longer exists but this is incorrect.  This cemetery is still in existance & is on land owned by a very nice christian woman.  Tombstones were photographed June, 2003 by Brad McGahan. Thanks Brad!

After the war Asa Jackson & George M.G. Doggett were with a posse that tried to capture southeast Missouri's notorious outlaw Sam Hildebrand.  One night they had the house where Hildebrand was hiding surrounded and had thrown turpentine balls on the roof for the purpose of burning him out.  Sam shot and killed a man that was standing next to Sheriff Clarke.  Even though it seemed impossible Sam managed to escape that night.
