CAPT. JOHN D. DOGGETT - was born in 1793 in Attleborough, Massachusetts & came to St. Louis in 1817.  In 1821 he married Sarah Sparks.  They became the parents of seven daughters & two sons.  In 1824 John D. Doggett was the administrator of the estate of Jesse Doggett who was husband & cousin of Rhoda Doggett who was my 4th great grandmother.

In 1827 John D. Doggett was chosen as alderman of St. Louis.   He was a riverboat captain & was part owner in 1830 of the first steamboat called the St. Louis.   His business was between St. Louis & New Orleans, and during his river career he commanded several fast & favorite boats.  He was an organizer of the Floating Dock Insurance Co. & a director of the Citizens Insurance Co.  Capt. Doggett was engaged in the auction commission business & retail merchandising.  In 1841 he became the mayor of St. Louis. He was one of the founders of the St. Louis Gas Light Company & served as president for several years. The enormous project of illuminating St. Louis City with gas for the first time was accomplished November 3rd, 1847 to the wonder and delight of thousands of residents.  In 1850 Capt. Doggett was president of Sectional Dock Co.   He died in St. Louis 9 May 1874 & is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
