Civil War

Rudy's grandfather William Fore was a Confederate Soldier who was captured & held as a prisoner-of-war at this notorious prison in Alton Illinois.  He & a friend managed to escape by floating across the Mississippi River at night on a board or a log.

Esther M. Ziock Carroll (pictured at left) visited the ruins of this prison in the 1980/90's.  The same day I attempted to locate records of this escape event at the Alton Library but there were 8 reels of micro-film of Civil War prison records & it would take a forever to go through them all.

The Francis Foree family resided for many years (approx. 1947 to 1980) in this beautiful antebellum home (believed to have been built by Philip Kaes in the 1850's).  When you go in the front door of the house the first room on the right was Rudy's room (this was after his parents were gone.) To the left was the kitchen.  Off & on over the years other Foree relatives lived in the house too. This  St. Louis County Landmark home has been vacant sicne 1980 & is now endangered:

Rudy Foree was born in Edgar Springs, Phelps County, Missouri in 1914.  His parents were Francis Marion Foree (originally spelled Fore) & Lurissa Adelade Barrow.

Rudy's service record states that he was a S/Sgt. with Co.E, 6th Range Inf. Bn. He entered the service 1 October 1941 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He was a Gun Crewman, light Artillery. He had a Combat Infantry Badge. Was listed as a rifle expert 8 May 1944.  He participated in the following battles & campaigns: New Guinea, Southern Philippines & Luzon. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars & a Good Conduct Medal.  A Lapel Button was issued & he was entitled to wear Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon & Philippine Liberation Ribbon w/2 Bronze Stars.  When he was stationed in the Philippines at New Guinea he had a pet wallaby.   When he got shipped out he had to leave it behind.

Rudy worked for many years for General Motors without missing a day of work. Even when the tractor turned over on him & crushed his foot he still didn’t miss any work.  In 1986 Rudy married Pearl Martin Ziock.  They resided in Cadet, Washington County, Missouri.  Rudy passed away in April 1997 & is buried in Redbud Memorial Gardens, Potosi, Missouri.
