Civil War
Rudy's grandfather
William Fore was a Confederate Soldier
who was captured & held as a
prisoner-of-war at this
notorious prison in Alton Illinois.
He & a friend managed to escape by
floating across the Mississippi River at
night on a board or a log.
Esther M. Ziock Carroll
(pictured at left) visited the ruins of
this prison in the 1980/90's. The
same day I attempted to locate records
of this escape event at the Alton
Library but there were 8 reels of
micro-film of Civil War prison records &
it would take a forever to go through
them all.

The
Francis Foree family resided for many years (approx.
1947 to 1980)
in this
beautiful antebellum home (believed to have been built by Philip
Kaes in the 1850's).
When
you go in the front door of the house the first room on the right was Rudy's room (this
was after his parents were gone.)
To the left was the kitchen.
Off & on over the years other Foree relatives lived in the house too.
This
St. Louis County Landmark home has been vacant sicne 1980 &
is
now endangered: http://carrollscorner.net/Endangered_Antebellum_Landmark_Home.htm
