DANIEL MARTIN was born 2 March 1842 in either Virginia or West Virginia or Tennessee. Daniel first appears in Missouri after the Civil War when he married Narcissus Huitt in Washington County 28 May 1865. (The marriage record is listed as G.M. Martin to Narcises Hewitte) Daniel & Narcises were married by R.H. Dickey, JP. They first resided in Crawford County then later Washington County near the Crawford County line.
There are two family legends about Daniel. The first is that he killed a man over some woman, changed his last name to Martin and came to Missouri bringing one brother with him. The second is that during the Civil War Daniel deserted the Union army after being forced to fight some of his own brothers who were with the Confederacy. Daniel then joined the Confederate army and rode with Quantrill's Raiders for a brief time. As yet I have been unable to neither prove or disprove either legend.
According to the 1890 Veterans census Daniel was a private with Co. G, 48th Virginia Infantry. I sent to the National Archives years ago but they could not find any military or pension records on Daniel. They did have a Daniel with the same company & regiment aforementioned but this Daniel went to Kansas after the war.
Daniel & Narcissus became the parents of six children. Narcissus died in childbirth with her last child, Daniel. After her death the oldest son, James, stayed with his father and the other children were raised by various relatives. Children of Daniel & Narcissus are:James Marion: Born 20 June 1866 in Courtois, Washington County, Missouri. On 6 March 1892 he married his step-sister Margie Frances Dicus daughter of Sarah Jane Hawkins & Brad Dicus. James died in Potosi on 3 June 1942 & is buried in the New Masonic Cemetery there. James death certificate gives his fathers birthplace as Tennessee. It gives his cause of death as myocarditis with coronary occlusion.

Does not give place of birth for parents.

Death certificate gives birthplace of father as Virginia. Cause of death: Gangreen of right leg following acute thrombosis by following urinary bladder infection.

Daniel Theodore: Born 7 May 1878. Married: Wife #1: ??? Wife #2: Mary Frances Wilson. I have a marriage date of 15 August 1897 at Floyd, Washington County, Missouri. This is all I have on Daniel (jr) except that I was told that his mother, Narcissus, died giving birth to him. Death Certificate info: gives birth date as 1874 instead of 1878. Death date: 25 May 1956 at Lutheran Hosp., St. Louis, cause: coronary thrombosis arterial sclerosis due to gastric ulcer - buried: Mt. Hope Cem., St. Louis. Informant: Pearl Leonard
After the death of his first wife Narcissus Daniel remarried to Sarah Jane Hawkins Dicus 28 March 1882. The Vienici web site gives the actual date as 2 April 1882. They were married by Henry C. Compton, JP, at the house of the bride. Daniel & Jane became the parents of five children:
Lulana J.: Born 5 January 1882. Married Samuel Breakfield in 1902. Lulana died 12 October 1973 at Clayton, St. Louis County, Missouri. She is buried at Shoal Creek Cemetery, Crawford County, Missouri.

Ottis W. (Ode): Born April, 1889. Married Eva M. Bays 28 December 1913. Ottis died 24 June 1916 at St. Louis Baptist Hospital & is buried in Shoal Creek Cemetery, Crawford County, Missouri.
Annie Bessie: Born 21 August 1891. Married Riley Breakfield 29 March 1906 at Quaker, Washington County, Missouri. Bessie died 20 October 1966 & is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, DeSoto, Jefferson County, Missouri.
If I remember the story correctly that I was told: Daniel,Sr., while carrying in firewood, tripped & fell on the front porch, injuring himself. This was supposedly the log cabin of his son, Otis, on Courtois Creek. George Breakfield sat up with Daniel that night. At around midnight Daniel asked, "What time is it?" They told him & he replied, "Well, maybe I'll make it till morning then." Those were the last words he ever said. He died the next day - 28 Feb. 1915. He is buried in Shoal Creek Cemetery, Huzzah, Crawford County, Missouri.

Independent Journal 4 June 1998)
JAMES MARION MARTIN was born in 1866 in Courtois, Washington County, Missouri 20 June 1866. He was the first child of Daniel Martin and Narcisses Huitt. Narcisses was the great granddaughter of James Huitt, Sr., who was an early settler (1805) in Bellevue, Washington County and the granddaughter of James Skaggs of Crawford County. James Martin had four brothers and one sister. After his mother died in childbirth with her sixth child James stayed with his father and his siblings were raised by various relatives. Daniel remarried in 1882 to Mrs. Sarah Jane Hawkins and eventually had five more children.
In 1892 James married his step-sister, Margie Frances Dicus Henslee. Margie was the daughter of Sarah Jane Hawkins and Brad Dicus and the widow of Jesse F. Henslee. Jesse and Margie had one daughter and James and Margie eventuallly had eight children four of whom died young.
In 1900 the James Martin family was residing in Reynolds County, Missouri but later moved back to Washington County. James' occupation was farming. Margie smoked a corn cob pipe and while residing at Irondale she maintained a still. She evidently passed her brewing tallents on to her son, Guy, as he was known to make homebrew a concoction which he referred to as "Panther Piss". Margie had psychic abilities (premonitions) a trait she inherited from her mother who was part Indian (Native American). Margie also told people's fortunes by reading tea leaves in the bottoms of tea cups and many of her predictions came true. Her favorite expression was, "Why, it's a sin to the crickets and grasshoppers!" She loved to dance and could not keep still whenever she heard "dancin' music". (Makes me think of Granny in the Beverly Hillbillies!)
James Martin died suddenly at age 75 while residing in Potosi, Washington County, Missouri. At 7:00 p.m. on June 3rd, 1942 he was returning home from Adams grocery store on Depot Hill. He collapsed on the porch and was dead before help could be summoned. Margie eventually remarried in southern Missouri, but later divorced and resumed the Martin name. She died at the home of her daughter, Ollie Maxwell, at 906 N. Mine St. in Potosi on November 17th 1955. Her age was 86 years, 11 months and 2 days. She is buried next to James, her husband of 50 years, in New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi.
James and Margie's children:
Cloa - (Margie's daughter by previous husband Jesse F. Henslee) b: 3 Jan. 1888 - d: 22 Oct. 1924 - buried: Mitchell Cem., Randolph T., Leadwood, St.FranCoMo - married Calvin Akins

Gladys
two other Martin children died young.
Ida Bell Martin married James Cooper. They had six children one of whom died as a child. Mr. Cooper was once sheriff of Washington County. Ida died in St. Charles County in 1988 at the age of 96 years and is buried in New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi. "Aunt Idie" was a very sweet and loving person and I have many fond memories of her.
GUY THOMAS MARTIN - was born 3 Jan. 1898 at Palmer, Washington County, Missouri. He married Berdie Mae Henderson in St. Francois County and they had eleven children one of whom died in infancy. Guy served in the U.S. Army in WWI. [Guy played the harmonica very well. He was a real scrapper and got into many fights!] My grandfather died in 1969 in St. Louis and is buried in New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi.
Olive Bradley Martin was first married to Ben Maxwell. They had seven children. After Ben's death she married Harry Engleke. Ollie died in 1973 and is buried in New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi.
Joseph Daniel Martin was married to Elva Dickey. Joseph died in 1961 and is buried next to his parents in New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi.

MYSTERY MARTIN - In the 1900 census Isabella & her husband, Neslon Martin, were living next door to James & Margie Martin in Webb Township, Reynolds Co., Mo. There were two children in the Isabell & Nelson Martin household: Angie & Elise TODD. They were listed as step-daughters to Nelson Martin. Nelson's birth year is given as Jan. 1872. Birthplace Missouri. Isabella's birth year is given as July, 1871.

Della Martin later married a Lane - she died 1951 & is buried in Steelville Cem.`
I have not yet been able to determine how Nelson Martin connects to my Martin family. Isabella is buried in Skaggs Cemetery in Crawford Co. near Shoal Creek where Daniel Martin, James' father, is buried. The picture at left was photographed in 1989. It gives her husband's name as W.N. Martin.
I found W. Nelson Martin in the 1880 census for Union T., Crawford County, Missouri. It gives his birth year as 1872 & birthplace Missouri. Birthplace of parents Missouri. He is listed as an orphan living with the Godbey family.
There were also five other Martin families in the 1900 Reynolds County, Missouri census: In Carroll Township - James M. Martin & wife Martha W., children Martha & James. The Jesse Martin family: Jesse's wife, Julia, & Jesse's father, Robert. In Jackson Township: ?Ning? Martin, wife Liza, children - Walter, Allen, Stella, George. The John A. Martin family: John & his wife Susan. In Lesterville Township: Sim J. Martin, wife Martha, children - Sim, Ellis, name illegible, Murtle. All Martin families have connections with Tennessee except for the Jesse Martin family.
