| Augustus Hawkins was born 31 April 1818 near Potosi. He was the son of John Hawkins a Revolutionary War soldier who settled in Washington County, Missouri circa 1790. Augustus married Elizabeth Jane Pinson 29 March 1841 & they became the parents of 13 children. The family was living in Kingston T., WashCoMo. in 1870 cn. Augustus died 26 July/Aug. 1890 & is buried in Blackwell, Mo.

From: History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties - 1888 Reprint: Augustus...........was born May 31, 1818; he was reared in Washington Co., in which county he has followed the occupation of farming all his life, owning a good farm of 375 acres. He married Miss Elizabeth Pinson in 1841; she was born in Washington County in 1820. To their union were born thirteen children, of whom nine are living, viz.: Rebecca (now Mrs. Solomon B. Strong), Jane (the wife of F. E. McGready), Newton, Emily, Milton, Margaret (now Mrs. Z. F. Higginbotham), Iris, Mary (wife of Francis Long), and Elsine. Although a Union man Mr. Hawkins suffered severely during the war by those at whose hands he had a right to better treatment. As one of the oldest settlers and most enterprising farmers of Washington County, he commands the respect and esteem of a host of friends and acquaintances.
